A proforma invoice is a preliminary bill: it shows the buyer what they will pay for an agreed order before the goods are supplied. Buyers use it to release an advance, to raise a purchase order internally, to open a letter of credit or to arrange import clearance.
Under GST a proforma invoice is not a tax invoice. Issuing one creates no tax liability for you and gives the buyer no input tax credit. The tax invoice still has to be issued at the time of supply.
For services, GST is payable on an advance when you receive it, and you issue a receipt voucher for it. For goods, GST on advances is not payable for most suppliers; tax falls due when you issue the invoice.
When the order ships, issue a proper tax invoice and adjust the advance in it. The proforma number can sit in the invoice’s reference field so the buyer can match the two.
Rebota issues proforma invoices from the same items and prices as the order, in its own number series, keeps them out of your sales and GST figures, and lets you bill the tax invoice against the order when it ships.
