What is a receipt?

A payment receipt is your written acknowledgment that you received money. It protects both sides: the payer has proof, and your books show exactly which invoices the money settled.

List each invoice the payment is against as a line (for example “Against INV-2026-0042”, quantity 1, the amount). The receipt total is the amount received.

What a receipt must show

Cash limits and GST advances

Under section 269ST of the Income-tax Act you may not receive ₹2 lakh or more in cash from one person in a day, for one transaction or for one event. Take larger amounts by bank transfer, UPI or cheque.

An advance received for services attracts GST when you receive it; for that you issue a GST receipt voucher showing the tax, not a plain receipt.

Common mistakes

Who uses this format

Make every receipt in Rebota

Rebota records each payment against the invoices it settles, keeps the customer’s balance and ageing up to date, and issues the receipt from the same entry, by cash, UPI, cheque or bank transfer.
