A credit note is issued by the supplier when an invoice charged more than is now payable: goods were returned, the rate or quantity was too high, or the service fell short. It reduces both the value and the tax of the original invoice.
Section 34 of the CGST Act sets the time limit: declare it in your return no later than 30 November after the end of the financial year of the supply, or the date you file the annual return, if earlier.
A credit note lowers what the buyer owes; a debit note raises it. Both are issued by the supplier under GST. When a buyer sends you a “debit note” for returned goods, it is their internal record; for GST, you as the supplier issue the credit note.
Discounts given after the sale reduce the taxable value only if they were agreed before or at the time of supply and are linked to specific invoices; otherwise issue a financial credit note without tax.
Rebota issues credit and debit notes against the original invoice, reverses the stock for returns, adjusts the customer’s balance and reports the note in your GST returns in the right month.
