What is a debit note?

A debit note is issued by the supplier when an invoice charged less than is payable: the price went up under an agreed clause, more quantity was supplied, or a rate was billed wrong. It adds value and tax to the original invoice.

Its contents are the same as a credit note’s under Rule 53 of the CGST Rules, and you pay the extra tax in the return for the month it is issued.

What a debit note must show

Buyer’s debit note for a purchase return

In everyday practice a buyer “debits” a supplier when sending goods back. That document is useful for the buyer’s own books, but under GST the tax is reduced only by the supplier’s credit note. Ask the supplier for one.
