  1. Enter your gross salary for the year.
  2. Enter each deduction you can actually claim — they only count in the old regime.

  4. The last line shows the total deductions at which the old regime would start to win.

Formula used

New regime: taxable = income − ₹75,000; slabs 0–4L nil, 5% to 8L, 10% to 12L, 15% to 16L, 20% to 20L, 25% to 24L, 30% above; nil tax up to ₹12L via 87A.

Old regime: taxable = income − ₹50,000 − deductions; slabs 0–2.5L nil, 5% to 5L, 20% to 10L, 30% above; 87A rebate up to ₹12,500 if taxable ≤ ₹5L.

Both: surcharge above ₹50L with marginal relief, plus 4% cess.

Old vs New Tax Regime Calculator FY 2025-26 — FAQs

Which tax regime is better for FY 2025-26?▾
For most salaried people the new regime is cheaper after Budget 2025, because income up to ₹12.75 lakh is tax-free and slabs are wider. The old regime can still win if you claim large deductions such as home-loan interest, full 80C, 80D, HRA and NPS.
Can I switch between regimes every year?▾
Salaried individuals without business income can choose each year when filing the return. Those with business income can switch back to the old regime only once.
Is HRA allowed in the new regime?▾
No. HRA, 80C, 80D and home-loan interest on a self-occupied house are available only in the old regime.
What is the break-even deduction?▾
It is the total of deductions (excluding the standard deduction) above which the old regime gives lower tax than the new one for your income.
