How to use the HRA Exemption Calculator

  1. Enter annual basic salary plus dearness allowance (if DA forms part of retirement benefits).
  2. Enter the HRA your employer pays in the year.
  3. Enter the total rent you actually pay for the year.
  4. Pick metro or non-metro city — the result shows the three limits, and the smallest one is your exemption.

Formula used

Exempt HRA = minimum of:

1. Actual HRA received
2. Rent paid − 10% × (Basic + DA)
3. 50% × (Basic + DA) in Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai; 40% elsewhere

Taxable HRA = HRA received − exempt HRA.
