HSN Code Finder & SAC Code List

Search all 21,928 HSN codes for goods and 681 SAC codes for services by name or number. Straight from the GSTN master dated 24 Apr 2026. Free, no sign-up, and your search never leaves the browser.

Try:

Type at least 2 letters or digits. The code list (about 250 KB) loads when you start typing.

The search uses the tariff's own words, so "smartphones" finds more than "mobile", and "footwear" more than "shoes". Common everyday words are translated for you when they find nothing.

How to read an HSN code

HSN (Harmonized System of Nomenclature) codes classify goods. The first six digits are the same in every country that uses the World Customs Organization's Harmonized System; India adds two more for its own tariff items. Every extra pair of digits narrows the description.

    85Chapter: electrical machinery and equipment
    8517Heading: telephone sets, including smartphones
    851713Subheading: smartphones
85171300Tariff item: the 8-digit code used in India

Services use SAC (Services Accounting Code) codes. They all start with 99: the next two digits are the heading (for example 9954, construction services) and the last two pick the exact service (995411, construction of residential buildings).

How many digits go on your invoice

Notification No. 78/2020-Central Tax, in force from 1 April 2021, sets the number of HSN or SAC digits on a tax invoice by your aggregate turnover in the previous financial year:

Aggregate turnover in the previous yearHSN / SAC digits on tax invoices
Up to ₹5 crore4 digits. May be left off invoices to unregistered buyers (B2C).
More than ₹5 crore6 digits, on every tax invoice.

These are minimums: you can always quote more digits. Importers and exporters use the full 8-digit tariff item from the Customs Tariff.

    Frequently Asked Questions

    What is an HSN code?▾
HSN (Harmonized System of Nomenclature) is the code that classifies goods for customs and GST. The first six digits follow the World Customs Organization's Harmonized System; India adds two more for its own 8-digit tariff items. Services use SAC codes instead, which all start with 99.
How many digits of HSN code must I show on a GST invoice?▾
Under Notification No. 78/2020-Central Tax, from 1 April 2021: 4 digits if your aggregate turnover in the previous financial year was up to ₹5 crore (they may be left off invoices to unregistered buyers), and 6 digits if it was more than ₹5 crore. You can always show more digits.
Where does this list of codes come from?▾
From the HSN/SAC master that the Goods and Services Tax Network publishes on tutorial.gst.gov.in (HSN_SAC.xlsx), workbook dated 24 Apr 2026. The codes and descriptions are shown as GSTN published them.
Does this tool tell me the GST rate for a code?▾
No. A GST rate is set by the CBIC rate notifications and depends on the exact description, not on the code alone. For goods, see the schedules to Notification No. 9/2025-Central Tax (Rate), in force from 22 September 2025, as amended; for services, Notification No. 11/2017-Central Tax (Rate) as amended.
What is the difference between HSN and SAC?▾
HSN codes classify goods and run from chapter 01 to 98. SAC codes classify services; they are 6 digits and all begin with 99, for example 998222 for accounting and bookkeeping or 996511 for road transport of goods.
My product is not described in these words. How do I search?▾
The tariff uses formal names, so search with them: "smartphones" rather than "mobile", "footwear" rather than "shoes", "medicaments" rather than "medicine". When an everyday word finds nothing, the tool tries the tariff wording for you. You can also open the chapter that fits and filter it.
