Buyer's Guide

ERPNext alternatives: when you want an ERP without a developer or a server

ERPNext is free, open source and broad. The licence costs nothing; the work is in hosting it, setting it up and keeping it current. This guide is for teams that would rather not do that work, and it says plainly when ERPNext is still the better choice.

Key Takeaways

  • Frappe's own pricing page says an ERPNext budget has two parts: hosting and implementation. Hosting on Frappe Cloud starts at US$5 (₹410) a month for a site; Frappe does not implement ERPNext itself, so setup comes from a partner or your own team.
  • If you have a developer or a good partner, ERPNext is hard to beat: you own the code, can host it anywhere, and can change anything.
  • If you do not, choose a product you can switch on and use from the browser. The real question is which of your processes it already covers without custom work.
  • Rebota runs in the browser with nothing to install or host, prices per company with users included, and covers projects, stock, production, sales, payroll and accounts in one ledger. It is not open source and cannot be self-hosted.

Why teams look past ERPNext #

ERPNext is described by its maker, Frappe, as "100% open-source", with accounting, procurement, sales, CRM, stock, manufacturing, projects, assets, point of sale, quality, support, HR and payroll, and a no-code builder. That breadth is real.

The reasons people look elsewhere are usually about running it, not about features:

  • Hosting. Frappe says ERPNext "needs to be hosted on cloud". You can pay Frappe Cloud or run your own server; self-hosting, per the ERPNext GitHub page, means Docker, Docker Compose and git, or the bench tool on the command line.
  • Implementation. Frappe's pricing FAQ says it "does not provide any implementation services directly". Its partners do implementations, customisation, migration and training, and Frappe itself notes that "any ERP is complex to implement on your own".
  • Upkeep. Upgrades, backups and custom scripts need someone who owns them. Frappe Cloud manages upgrades and backups; custom work still needs a person.

If you have that person, these are not problems. If you do not, they are most of the cost.

What ERPNext does better #

  • Open source. GPL-3.0, with the code on GitHub. Frappe's page says everything is "yours to use, modify, or resell". No proprietary product, Rebota included, gives you that.
  • Host it where you like. Your own server, any cloud, or Frappe Cloud. Rebota has no self-hosted or on-premise version.
  • Change anything. Scripting, custom apps and the no-code builder go deeper than adding fields. In Rebota you can add your own fields to documents and set approval rules, but you cannot change how a screen works or install third-party apps.
  • A large partner network. Frappe lists over 200 partners worldwide. Rebota has no partner network; during the trial the Rebota team imports your masters and opening balances free.
  • No per-user licence. On Frappe Cloud, a site is priced as hosting, not per user.

For a straight comparison of the two best-known open-source ERPs, see Odoo vs ERPNext.

The alternatives #

Odoo: many apps, with one app free for unlimited users on Odoo Online, and Standard and Custom plans priced per user a month. Studio (customisation), several companies, the external API and self-hosting or Odoo.sh are on Custom. Odoo also has an open-source Community edition, which you host yourself. Prices are shown in your local currency on odoo.com/pricing.

Zoho One: a bundle of Zoho's business apps. US$37 a user a month for the first year if you license every employee, or US$90 a user a month for any number of users, on annual licensing, VAT extra. A good fit if you already use Zoho apps.

Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central: Essentials US$80 and Premium US$110 a user a month, paid yearly, with Team Members at US$8; Microsoft says to contact a partner to buy. A fit for companies already on Microsoft 365.

Rebota: runs in the browser; there is no server to set up and nothing to install. After sign-up you pick your sector, and the screens for it switch on: BOQ, RA bills and site records for contractors; BOM, MRP and work orders for manufacturers; warehouses, price lists and delivery notes for traders; plus purchase, sales, payroll and double-entry accounts in one ledger. Masters and opening balances can be imported from Excel. Paid plans are priced per company with users included, shown in your country's currency on /pricing. After the 15-day trial, keep using Rebota free: 1 user, 30 GST invoices a month, stock, suppliers and cash. Upgrade only when you need more.

Read on 8 November 2026 on the makers' own pages: frappe.io/erpnext, frappe.io/erpnext/pricing, frappe.io/cloud/pricing, github.com/frappe/erpnext, odoo.com/pricing, zoho.com/one/pricing, Business Central pricing. Prices exclude tax and can differ by country.

Outside India: what Rebota covers and what it does not #

Rebota is set up for 36 countries. India has the full statutory set. For 32 other countries the VAT or GST rates and tax-ID checks are configured and tax is worked out on every document; for the UK, UAE, Saudi Arabia, Australia and Kenya it also lays out the return figures box by box. Each invoice, bill and purchase order can carry its own currency and exchange rate.

It does not submit returns to any tax authority, and e-invoicing is built for India only: there is no Saudi ZATCA Phase 2, no Kenya eTIMS and no Peppol connection yet. If your country requires e-invoicing from the software, check that first. Country details are on the tax and e-invoicing pages.

When to stay on ERPNext #

Stay if someone already runs it well, your custom scripts or apps matter to the business, or you need to own the code or host the data yourself. A working ERP is worth a lot, and moving from it costs time.

Which One Should You Actually Use

Who Should Use Rebota

Rebota fits small and mid-sized contractors, manufacturers, traders and service firms that want one system for operations and accounts, have no developer, and do not want to run a server.

Who Should NOT Use Rebota (Yet)

A business that needs open source, self-hosting, deep custom development, third-party apps, or e-invoicing outside India built into the software. ERPNext or Odoo fits those better.

When the Other Option Is Genuinely Better

ERPNext when you have technical help or must own the code. Odoo when you want the widest app range and have a partner. Zoho One for Zoho users. Business Central for Microsoft shops.

When You Don't Need Software At All

One person keeping simple books and a short stock list may not need an ERP yet. Once several people touch the same orders, stock and payments, spreadsheets lose track of who changed what.

Hidden Costs to Weigh In Either Direction

For ERPNext: implementation, upgrades, custom-script upkeep and server time. For per-user products: every user you add. For any switch: data migration, retraining and rebuilt reports.

The Short Version

Have a developer or partner: ERPNext is excellent value. Do not: choose the product that already has your sector's screens and runs without setup work, and check it on your own data before you decide.

Professional Practices

Before you choose, write down who will host, upgrade and fix the system for the next three years, and what that costs in money or time. Then demo each alternative on your three most common documents, using your own data, not the vendor's sample company.

Common Mistakes

Patterns we see repeatedly across Indian construction sites — worth checking against your own process.
1
Treating a free licence as a free ERP
Hosting, implementation and upkeep become the real bill, and nobody budgeted for them.
2
Leaving a well-run ERPNext for a cleaner demo
Months of migration for features you already had.
3
Not checking country rules before switching
An e-invoicing mandate the new system does not meet.

Action Checklist

  • List who sets up, hosts and maintains the system today, and the yearly cost.
  • List the custom scripts and apps you rely on; check each alternative covers them.
  • Check your country's e-invoicing and return rules against each product.
  • Demo on your own data: a sale, a purchase and a stock movement.
  • Plan the move at a financial-year start with opening balances.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a simpler alternative to ERPNext or Odoo that does not need developers to set up?▾
Look for a hosted product with your sector's screens built in, so there is nothing to install or configure in code. Zoho One and Business Central are hosted, but per user, and Business Central is bought through partners. Rebota runs in the browser: you pick your sector after sign-up and its screens switch on, with users included in a per-company price. None of these is open source.
How much does ERPNext cost?▾
The software is free and open source under GPL-3.0. On 8 November 2026, Frappe's pricing page listed Frappe Cloud sites from US$5 (₹410) a month, with servers costing more, and said the total also includes implementation, which Frappe does not provide directly. Self-hosting costs your own server and time.
Do I need a developer to run ERPNext?▾
Frappe's FAQ says you do not necessarily need an IT team. Frappe Cloud handles hosting, upgrades and backups. Self-hosting uses Docker or the bench command-line tool, and custom scripts or apps need someone technical. Frappe recommends a partner for implementation.
Is Rebota open source, and can I host it myself?▾
No. Rebota is a proprietary product hosted by Rebota and used in the browser. There is no self-hosted or on-premise version. If you need either, ERPNext or Odoo Community fits better.
Can I move from ERPNext to Rebota?▾
Yes, for standard data: export masters, open documents and opening balances to spreadsheets and import them at a cut-over date. Custom scripts and apps do not move; check that Rebota's standard screens cover what they did before you plan the move.
Is ERPNext better than Odoo?▾
ERPNext has no per-user licence and is fully open source; Odoo has more apps and a larger partner network. See Odoo vs ERPNext for the detail.
