How to use the RD Calculator

  1. Enter the amount you will deposit each month.
  2. Enter the RD interest rate offered by your bank or post office.
  3. Enter the tenure in months (6 to 120).
  4. Read the maturity amount and interest earned.

Formula used

M = Σ R × (1 + r/400)k/3 for k = 1 … N

R = monthly instalment, r = annual rate in %, k = months each instalment stays deposited. Equivalent closed form: M = R[(1+i)n − 1] ÷ [1 − (1+i)−1/3], i = r/400, n = quarters.

RD Calculator — FAQs

How is RD interest compounded?▾
Indian banks and the post office compound recurring deposit interest quarterly. Each instalment earns interest only for the months it stays in the account.
RD or SIP — which is better?▾
An RD gives a guaranteed return with no market risk; a SIP in equity funds can earn more over long periods but can also fall. Many people use RDs for goals under 3 years.
What happens if I miss an RD instalment?▾
Banks charge a small penalty per missed instalment, and several missed instalments can lead to premature closure.
Is RD interest taxable?▾
Yes, RD interest is taxed at your slab rate and TDS applies above the annual threshold, just like FDs.
