Zoho Books is good software, and most people who leave it do so for one specific reason. Name the reason and the right alternative is usually obvious, and sometimes the answer is a different Zoho plan.
Zoho Books Free covers one user and an accountant while revenue stays under ₹25 lakh in a financial year. Past that, the next step is Standard: ₹749 a month billed yearly (₹899 monthly) for three users, before GST.
That is about ₹9,000 a year. Before switching to save it, price the move: re-entering masters, a new system for your accountant, and a month of mistakes. If Zoho Books works for you, paying for Standard is often the right call. If you want to compare, Rebota keeps a free plan after its trial too: Yes. Every account gets 15 days with all modules, and after the trial Rebota stays free for 1 user, 30 GST invoices a month, stock, suppliers and cash. Nothing is charged automatically; upgrade when you need more users, invoices or modules.
Zoho Books plans include 3, 5, 10, 15 or 25 users. If several people bill in one office, BUSY Standard (₹16,500 one-time, unlimited users in one office) or Tally Gold (₹67,500 one-time, unlimited users on the network) can cost less over three years. If people work in different places, stay in the cloud: compare Zoho's next plan with per-company pricing such as Rebota's, where users come with the plan.
Batch and serial tracking and advanced inventory sit on Zoho Books Elite, ₹4,999 a month billed yearly. BUSY includes batch-wise stock in its ₹16,500 Standard licence and serial numbers and size/colour items on its SMART subscription; Tally includes godowns and batches in every edition. For a distributor or trader, that difference is often the whole decision. See Tally vs BUSY.
Most Indian CAs work in Tally. If yours asks for a Tally backup every year and charges for the conversion, moving to TallyPrime (Silver ₹22,500 one-time, or rent at ₹8,100 a year) often pays for itself in fees. The three-year comparison is on Tally vs Zoho Books.
Production orders, projects with BOQs, site records, payroll and approvals are ERP work. Three ways to get it:
Export contacts, items, the chart of accounts and open invoices and bills to spreadsheets before you cancel anything. Pick a cut-over date at a month or year start, carry opening balances, not the whole history, and keep the old exports with your audit papers. Tie the trial balance in both systems on the cut-over date.
| Alternative | Choose it when | Price (before GST) | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Zoho Books Standard | Only the free limit changed | ₹749 a month yearly, 3 users | Batch and serial need Elite |
| TallyPrime | Your CA works in Tally; offline | Silver ₹22,500; Gold ₹67,500 | TSS yearly; remote access is an add-on |
| BUSY | Stock-heavy trading, one office | Standard ₹16,500 one-time | Desktop; BUSY Online for remote work |
| Vyapar | Shop billing from a phone | ₹4,399–₹4,799 a year | Lighter accounting |
| Zoho ERP | Stay in Zoho, need an ERP | ₹999 a user a month, min 5 users | New in 2026; per-employee charges |
| Odoo | Broad ERP, have a partner | ₹580–₹1,080 a user a month | Per-user cost and setup |
| Rebota | Projects, production or sites | Free plan; paid plans per company | Cloud only; you file GST on the portal |
Rebota fits a Zoho Books user whose business now has operations to run: a contractor billing against BOQs, a manufacturer with production orders, a trader with batch and serial stock across godowns, or a team on payroll.
A freelancer, agency or small trader who left only because the free plan ended. Zoho Books Standard, Tally or Vyapar is a simpler answer.
Zoho Books itself wins if the only change is the free limit. Tally wins when the CA needs it. BUSY wins for stock-heavy trading in one office. Zoho ERP wins for businesses committed to Zoho. Odoo wins with a partner and broad needs.
Rarely, once you have outgrown a free accounting plan. Spreadsheets lose the audit trail and the GST reports you already rely on.
The move itself: exporting and cleaning masters, retraining, a new workflow for the CA, and a month of slower billing. Price it before choosing a cheaper licence.
Free limit: stay on Zoho Books Standard. CA on Tally: Tally. Stock-heavy trading: BUSY. Need an ERP: Zoho ERP if you want to stay in Zoho, Odoo with a partner, Rebota for Indian SME operations priced per company.
Write the reason you are leaving in one sentence, and ask each alternative to show how it handles exactly that, with your data. A switch made to save ₹9,000 a year should not cost three months of disruption; a switch made because stock or operations outgrew the software usually should.
